Our traditions

A Christmas tradition is to make the crib. In order to make the crib you have to decorate a table with figures of shepherds, animals, houses, rivers, trees. .In the crib you can’t miss the baby Jesus, the Virgin Mary, Sant Joseph, the angel and the “Caganer”. When you have the figures set, get some colour lights around the crib. The crib is a symbol of Christmas.

The “Tió” is a Catalan tradition from many years ago. On 24th, at night all children meet their families in a house, it’s a magical night because it’s the only night in which the “Tió” comes to all houses.
The children are very happy because when they hit the “Tió” and they sing a special Christmas carol, he “shits” presents and sweets. But the parents aren´t very happy because they have to buy all the presents and put them under the “Tió”… (Now, you know the secret . . .)

We celebrate the New Year’s Eve with the family or friends. In the morning, we buy the food, the alcohol and the “cotillón” bag. In the “cotillón” bag, there is a mask, a party hat, a plastic trumpet, confetti and other things.
In the evening we get ready for the party. We put on our favourite evening dress. At night we meet family or friends in a house, and we have dinner. We have a great time and we use the things in the “cotillón” bag.
At quarter to twelve we watch the strikes programme on TV. The Spanish one is always in “La puerta del Sol” in Madrid. When the clock strikes, we eat twelve grapes. When we finish, we kiss each other and we say : “Bon any nou!”. (Happy New Year!)
We keep awake all the night and we eat chocolate and “churros” (a kind of doughnuts) for breakfast, before going to sleep.

On the 31 of December, we celebrate New Year's Eve. Normally we celebrate it with our partner, with our friends or with our family.
First we have dinner all together.
At a quarter to eleven we prepare the grapes.
At ten minutes to twelve the party starts! In each strike we eat a grain of grape. When we have eaten everything, the year has ended! We get very happy, because once again another year has gone. Then we celebrate dancing till the next morning!
